Important Info on solo and ensemble entries for the 2009 District Festival.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) which sponsors the district and state events limits
the number of solos and ensembles a school can take to the festival. Due to the size of our school we are limited
to 50 solos. In the past this has never been a problem, however, with the growth of our program, we simply have more
students wanting to take solos than we have spots for. This situation is compounded by the fact that several students
take multiple solos. Piano solos are counted among our 50 entries as are solos taken on a secondary instrument...for
example...if a student's primary instrument is clarinet and they want to take a flute solo this is allowed as long as
the school's total entries do not exceed 50. We are now facing a shortage of solo spots for the district festival due
to piano and secondary instrument solos. As a result, the staff has had to make some tough decisions about solo entries
for the 2009 festival. At this point a student will only be allowed to take ONE solo on his/her PRIMARY instrument
and ONE piano solo. No secondary instrument solos will be accepted. I hope this will create enough openings for
all students who want to take a solos. However, if we are still experiencing a shortage of available spots after enforcing
this rule, our next step will be to no longer accept piano entries. These decisions were made from the perspective
of the district's instrumental music curriculum. We do not offer piano in the curriculum and thus those events are not
required for us to accept. While we support and encourage students to study piano, we can not allow instrumental solos
to be declined to offer solo spots for an instrument not addressed in the districts curriculum. If you have any
